1. How HPA Works

An HPA system replaces the AEG gearbox or GBB gas system with compressed air. The air path is simple:

  1. Tank — A high-pressure air tank (typically 3000-4500 PSI) worn on the back or belt
  2. Regulator — Reduces tank pressure to a usable level (60-120 PSI depending on the engine)
  3. Line — A flexible hose connects the regulator to the engine inside the replica
  4. Engine — The HPA engine (solenoid or mechanical valve) releases a precise burst of air behind the BB
  5. Barrel — The BB is propelled down the barrel with consistent pressure every shot

Most HPA engines include an FCU (Fire Control Unit) — an electronic board that controls fire modes (semi, burst, full-auto), rate of fire, and dwell (how long the valve stays open). The FCU is powered by a small battery, typically a 7.4v LiPo or Titan HPA battery.

Key advantage: Because compressed air pressure is constant (unlike gas which varies with temperature, or springs that degrade), HPA gives you rock-solid FPS consistency shot after shot, in any weather.

2. Types of HPA Systems

HPA engines come in two main categories:

Closed Bolt — AEG Drop-In (INFERNO, Kythera)

Closed bolt engines replace the gearbox in an existing AEG shell. The BB sits in the hop-up chamber before firing, just like an AEG. This means you can convert any standard AEG to HPA:

  • Wolverine INFERNO Gen 2 — Electronic solenoid engine with FCU. Full fire mode control, adjustable dwell and ROF
  • Polarstar Kythera V2 — Mechanical (no battery needed). Semi-auto only. Extremely reliable

Best for: players who already own AEGs and want HPA performance without buying a new platform.

Open Bolt — Purpose-Built (Wolverine MTW)

Open bolt systems are designed from the ground up for HPA. The BB is loaded into the chamber by the air pulse itself, not by a nozzle. The Wolverine MTW is the premier open-bolt HPA platform:

  • Purpose-built receiver — No AEG shell compromises. Designed for HPA from day one
  • Superior air seal — The MTW's integrated hop-up and nozzle system delivers exceptional consistency
  • Instant trigger — Zero lag. The trigger pull directly actuates the solenoid
  • Lightweight — No gearbox weight. MTW rifles are significantly lighter than comparable AEGs

3. Wolverine MTW Platform

The Wolverine MTW is the most advanced HPA rifle available. Purpose-built around the Wolverine engine, it offers performance that no AEG can match. The MTW line includes several variants:

MTW Forged Series — From 699.95€

The entry point to the MTW platform. Forged aluminium receiver with mil-spec construction. Available in 10" and 14" barrel lengths:

Polarstar Kythera V2 M4 Kit — 349.95€

The Kythera is a mechanical HPA engine — no battery or FCU required. It uses a purely mechanical valve system for semi-auto operation. Benefits:

  • No battery needed — One less thing to charge and carry
  • Extremely reliable — No electronics to fail
  • Semi-auto only — Perfect for milsim and fields with semi-only rules
  • Adjustable trigger pull — Mechanical adjustment for feel and travel

6. Regulators

The regulator steps down the high tank pressure (3000-4500 PSI) to the working pressure the engine needs (typically 60-120 PSI). A good regulator is essential for consistent performance.

Wolverine Storm Cat5 Regulator + Line — 149.95€

The Storm Category 5 is Wolverine's latest tournament-grade regulator. It features:

  • Consistent output pressure — Maintains stable pressure even as tank depletes
  • Easy adjustment — Large dial for quick pressure changes between games
  • Includes HPA line — Comes with the line to connect to your engine
  • Tournament lock — Lockable adjustment to prevent tampering

7. Hop-Up

The MTW uses the Wolverine Phoenix Hop-Up Chamber, a purpose-designed unit for the MTW platform. It provides precise, repeatable hop adjustment:

  • Tool-less adjustment — Easy dial access for on-the-fly hop changes
  • Consistent pressure — The Phoenix chamber applies uniform hop pressure for predictable trajectories
  • Designed for the MTW — Perfect fit, no shimming or modification needed

8. Inner Barrels

The inner barrel is where accuracy is born. Stalker Morpheus barrels are available in MTW-specific lengths, made from carbon steel with a precision bore:

11. Required Equipment

To run an HPA setup, you need three core components beyond the replica itself:

1. HPA Tank

A compressed air tank (also called a bottle). Common sizes:

  • 48ci / 3000 PSI — Compact, lightweight. Good for ~1500 shots. Great for CQB
  • 68ci / 4500 PSI — The standard. ~3000+ shots. Best all-round choice
  • 90ci / 4500 PSI — Maximum capacity. ~4000+ shots. For long milsim events

Tanks must be hydro-tested every 5 years (date stamped on tank). Use only DOT/TC certified tanks.

2. Regulator

Steps down tank pressure to engine working pressure. The Wolverine Storm Cat5 is our recommendation. Most regulators thread directly onto the tank.

3. HPA Line

Connects the regulator to the engine. Most kits include one. The 36" Flexible Line is a popular replacement for added flexibility. Standard fittings are Foster (US) type.

Budget tip: Many fields offer HPA tank refills. A 68ci tank at 4500 PSI gives you a full day of play. Some fields also rent tanks if you want to try HPA before investing.

12. Maintenance

HPA systems are significantly lower maintenance than AEGs or GBBs. No gears to strip, no gas seals to replace. Key maintenance points:

Engine

  • Lubricate the solenoid every 10,000-15,000 shots with a drop of HPA-safe lubricant
  • Check O-rings every 6 months. Replace any that show wear or cracking
  • Keep the FCU dry — Moisture is the enemy of electronics

Regulator

  • No user serviceable parts inside most regulators. If output pressure becomes inconsistent, contact the manufacturer
  • Keep the adjustment dial clean — Dirt can affect accuracy of pressure setting

Tank

  • Hydro-test every 5 years (required by law in most countries)
  • Never over-fill — Fill only to the rated PSI
  • Store partially pressurised — Don't leave tanks completely empty for long periods
  • Inspect the burst disc — Replace if corroded or damaged

Line

  • Check fittings for leaks with soapy water. Bubbles indicate a leak
  • Avoid kinks — Store coiled, not folded
  • Replace if cracked — Lines degrade over time with UV exposure

Barrel & Hop-Up

Same as any airsoft replica: clean the inner barrel with a microfibre patch every 5-10 game days. A drop of silicone on the patch, 2-3 passes, then a dry patch.
