The M4 MWS (Modular Weapon System) by Tokyo Marui revolutionised GBB rifles. This name refers to all Tokyo Marui replicas based on the M4 / AR-15 platform that use the ZET System:

MWS variants: M4A1, MK18, CQBR Block 1, Carabine MTR16 and URG-I share the same internal system (bolt, trigger, hop-up...). All upgrades in this guide are cross-compatible.

The MWS hop-up is an VSR-compatible design mounted on top of the upper receiver. Several aftermarket chambers improve accuracy and make adjustment easier.

Hop Arms

Aftermarket hop arms provide more uniform contact with the bucking, improving consistency of the effect. One of the most used is the Laylax Strike Hop Arm or as most people call it, the Laylax lever or the red lever or arm

MWS buckings are VSR (not interchangeable with standard AEG). 

This will be one of the longest sections of the guide, as there are many possible bucking configurations depending on the inner barrel and hop-up chamber being used.

Additionally, the flight path of the BB is a very personal preference, and different players may prefer different behaviors. Nevertheless, we will try to explain everything in the simplest and clearest way possible.

1. With the STALKER MWS Hop up Camber

Stalker offers a dedicated VSR bucking called kraken with double fin to improve the alignment between the bucking seam and the Morpheus inner barrel and you have different shores: 40° to 80° (harder = less spin x click).

If you decide to install the Stalker chamber while keeping the stock inner barrel, there is no issue at all, as the U-Hop bucking is also available in the Kraken cut, making it fully compatible with the Stalker chamber.

If you decide to install the Kraken chamber but want to use an inner barrel other than the Morpheus or the stock one, such as PDI, Prometheus, TNT, Maple Leaf, etc., and you have ruled out the SR-Hop and U-Hop seams mentioned earlier, there is another Kraken bucking version featuring the C-Hop patch that may be what you are looking for.

This option maintains the alignment benefits provided by the Stalker chamber when used with Kraken-cut buckings (double-fin design).

However, please note that these double-fin Kraken buckings are only compatible with the Stalker Kraken MWS chamber. They are not compatible with any other chamber, as other hop-up chambers do not support double-fin buckings.

On the other hand, the Kraken chamber itself is compatible with both double-fin buckings (Kraken cut) and single-fin buckings (standard VSR).

   2. With Another Hop Up Chambers

If you choose not to install the Kraken chamber, there is no problem. Depending on the inner barrel you are using (whether it has a wide or narrow hop window), there are several alternatives available.

One of the options that has been working best for us, and that we commonly install in our basic upgrades for customers who prefer not to use the Kraken chamber due to its cost, is the Stalker U-Hop bucking in the standard VSR cut.

If you decide to install a Stalker Morpheus inner barrel (we recommend the 250 mm length for the entire MWS platform while keeping the stock chamber), you can also take advantage of the SR-Hop seam, which is specifically designed for the hop window of that barrel.

If  you decide to install another inner barrel than the Morpheus or the stock one, such as PDI, Prometheus, TNT, Maple Leaf, etc., and you have ruled out the SR-Hop and U-Hop seams mentioned earlier, there is another bucking version featuring the C-Hop seam that may be what you are looking for.

Of course, there are also many other hop-up bucking brands that work well in MWS configurations, such as Maple Leaf, Modify, Prometheus, CowCow, Silverback, and others, which may perfectly fit into your precision setup.   However, after many tests and trials, the configurations explained above are the ones that have worked best for us.

Nubs

The nub is the component that sits between the hop-up lever and the hop-up bucking, connecting both parts and transferring the pressure from the lever onto the bucking.

Keep in mind that some levers, such as the Laylax or WiiTech, do not use a separate nub, as the nub is already integrated into the lever itself.

There are several types of nubs. One of the most well-known is the Maple Leaf Omega nub, which many people install in their MWS. It is a simple and affordable way to improve the performance of your MWS without spending much.

Before the Stalker chamber was available (which already comes with its own nubs and is what we currently install in our upgrades), a configuration that gave very good results was the Panthera nub combined with a 250 mm Morpheus barrel, SR-Hop bucking, and the Laylax custom chamber.

It is necessary to replace the hop-up chamber, as the Panthera nub does not fit inside the stock chamber.

The MWS, in all its variants—including the MTR16, which is the longest of them—comes with a 250 mm inner barrel with a 6.08 mm inner diameter. Additionally, the material they are made from is brass.

There is a common belief, especially in European markets, that precision barrels are narrower barrels. However, in reality, the bore diameter does not 100% determine accuracy. In other words, if your 6.00 barrel has poor internal finishing, it will perform much worse than the stock Marui barrel, no matter how tight it is.

In other parts of the world, tightbore barrels are often referred to as “power barrels,” while precision barrels are typically considered to be those with an inner diameter of 6.03 mm and above.

With that clarified, we now move into a fairly complex topic: what makes a good barrel a good barrel?

1. Material – this determines durability and overall resistance.

2. Finish – with a good material, you can achieve a high-quality finish. You wouldn’t be able to get a proper finish if you tried to make a barrel out of something like a drinking straw, because the material simply wouldn’t allow it.
3. Crown – this part is delicate. A well-designed crown allows the air pushing the BB to disperse evenly to the sides as it exits, preventing turbulence from the air that would otherwise continue pushing the BB unevenly.
4. Barrel window opening – this is directly related to the hop-up rubber. A larger window allows you to use a rubber with a bigger contact patch, increasing friction between the BB and the rubber, which generates better spin. If the barrel window is too small, it will greatly limit the rubbers you can use and also prevent a proper spin effect, meaning the BB won’t achieve that desired “float” as it exits the barrel.

Taking all these characteristics into account, a very good option is Morpheus barrels. They are made of steel, with a very high-quality finish and polishing, a wide crown that allows proper air dispersion, and a large window. In addition, they feature their own contact patch design, the SR Hop, which fits perfectly into their window.

We do not recommend using a barrel length significantly longer than this, because depending on the setup, an excessively long barrel can create a vacuum effect as the BB exits. This can cause turbulence, negatively affecting shot stability and accuracy.

Additionally, we must take into account that it needs to fit inside our outer barrel.

The bolt carrier is the heart of the MWS system. Aftermarket bolts offer higher cycle speed (for CQB), stronger recoil (for realism) or more durable materials.

Regular maintenance = long service life. The MWS is a GBB system that requires periodic attention to perform optimally.

Basic routine (every game day)

• Clean the inner barrel with a rod and microfibre cloth
• Lubricate the bolt carrier seals with silicone spray
• Check the condition of the magazine feed lips
• Fill magazines with quality gas (Green Gas or compatible)

Monthly maintenance

• Disassemble the bolt carrier and clean/lubricate internals
• Inspect magazine O-rings (replace if deformed)
• Check the hop-up bucking (replace if hardened)
• Verify nozzle adjustment (NPAS if adjustable)
