Tokyo Marui AKM GBBR
The Russian AKM rifle, or Автома́т Кала́шникова модернизи́рованный, is the modernized version of the legendary AK-47 rifle designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, which has been in service with the Russian army since 1959. It has become the most common AK variant worldwide due to its simplified mass-production process, such as the use of stamped steel replacing the milled construction of the previous model.
Tokyo Marui releases this version of the popular Russian rifle following in the footsteps of the unquestionable success of the MWS and its Z-System.
The top cover is made of stamped steel, while the receiver is manufactured using the new metal alloy Marui has been using in its latest models, which has proven—both in the MWS and its MK18 variant—to withstand intensive use perfectly.
The stock on this model is made of high-quality polymer with a specific paint treatment that provides a realistic wood appearance by digitally scanning the wood texture and printing it onto a 3D surface while maintaining the original look. Even so, purists will be pleased to know that, with minimal modifications, the airsoft replica accepts original grips as well as real wood parts for both the handguard and the stock.
As for the internal system, it was designed by the same engineer behind the Hi-Capa 5.1, so we can safely assume the performance will be just as exceptional as in those airsoft replicas. During the development of this AK, numerous challenges arose in achieving realistic operation combined with the efficiency that characterizes Marui. Due to the operating system of AK-type rifles, the Z-System—so successful in the M4 and Type 89 family—could not be used, as in AK models the bolt remains forward after firing the last round. Therefore, the Japanese brand had to create a completely new system, patented as the "gas blowback machine gun AKM," which allows that once the magazine is empty, if the trigger is pulled again, you will only hear the hammer "click" on air, as the bolt will have automatically returned to its forward position.
The mechanism can be disengaged to allow dry firing without BBs while still enjoying the recoil, just like with the Z-System, where you can manually operate the bolt to cycle without BBs.
The magazine holds 35 BBs and is fully molded in aluminum—another production challenge, as achieving injection molding was not easy. During this process, they also managed to design the entire magazine as a continuous gas reservoir that utilizes the full curve of the magazine. This contrasts with traditional AK gas magazines, which typically feature a rectangular gas tank that wastes much of the internal space and increases cost due to a higher number of parts required for manufacturing.
The airsoft replica features impressive recoil thanks to its 19mm cylinder and, according to everyone fortunate enough to have tested it so far, the shooting sensation is even stronger than with the MWS model.
